But what do I write?

I’ll be honest: I sat down to write this blog post with absolutely no idea what to write about. I had good intentions…a fresh cup of tea, a tidy-ish desk, a little window of time between commissions and then, of course, I got distracted.
First I thought, ‘‘Oh, I’ll just tidy my desk.’’
Then I decided I needed to swatch all of my art supplies (why?).
Then I decided I actually wanted to do admin (WHAT).

Suddenly, it had been days and I’d completely given up on the whole blog idea, backed up by thoughts of “Well… who cares anyway?”
As an illustrator, especially an illustrator who works from home, so much of my job involves turning ideas into something beautiful. But when it comes to writing about my work (or myself!), my mind sometimes just… floats away.
The Creative Clouds
I think that there’s this expectation in the creative world that inspiration should be a constant. But in reality…it feels more like a wispy cloud. It’s floating close by and when you try to catch it, it disappears. And if it does drift back, it’s never quite the same.
Some days I’m in a rainstorm of ideas (I like wintery weather, so this metaphor works for me). Other days… all I want to do is swatch my supplies and call it “productive”.
Distractions or Creative Avoidance?
I’ve realised that the distractions aren’t always the issue, they’re often a sign I’m avoiding a task. Starting something new, whether it’s a blog post or a bespoke commission, can feel oddly intimidating.
But once I do begin, even with the tiniest thread of an idea, things often unravel into something real.
So Here I Am, Writing About Not Knowing What to Write
And honestly? It feels quite freeing. Not every post needs to be polished or full of announcements. Sometimes it’s enough to show up, say “I’m figuring it out,” and share a real moment from behind the scenes of my creative process.
A Little More About Being Me
Part of why I want to write more on this blog is because so much of me goes into my creative process.
When someone commissions a piece of wedding stationery or a personalised illustration, they’re not just getting the final artwork. They’re getting the care, curiosity, and thoughtfulness I bring to every stage.
The experience of working together is just as important as the finished piece. Sharing more of who I am feels like a natural extension of that, and I hope it helps you feel a little closer to the person behind the pen.
Finding the Magic in the Messy Moments
If you’ve ever sat down to write your vows, draft your wedding invitations, or even send a heartfelt note and wondered, “Why is this suddenly so hard?” you’re in good company. Our brains love to complicate simple things.
Even when my ideas are hiding and my attention span is off reorganising cupboards, I still love what I do. These quiet, wispy moments are just as much a part of the creative process as the inspired ones.
So, if you’re reading this with a cold cup of tea nearby, putting off something you meant to do… here’s your gentle nudge to start.
Just a little.
You might be surprised where it leads.
Thanks for being here,
Harriet x
